This class will use Walter Brueggemann’s book about the importance of keeping a Sabbath. Brueggemann writes that the Sabbath is not simply about keeping rules, but rather about becoming a whole person and restoring a whole society. We live to achieve, accomplish, perform, and possess. Yet, keeping the Sabbath allows us to break this restless cycle and focus on what is truly important: God, other people, all life. Brueggemann offers a vision of the wholeness God intends, giving Christians a glimpse of a more fulfilling and simpler life through Sabbath observance.

This class gives a better understanding of the both the Old and New Testaments, including the 'big picture', the main storyline and how it all fits together. We will walk you through the Old Testament from the creation story in Genesis up to the time of Jesus. We will cover the main narrative, the major characters of the Old Testament, and how the books of the Old Testament fit into this story. Then we will walk through the New Testament, starting with Jesus' ministry and continuing through Paul's ministry in Acts, and his letters. We will touch briefly on each of the books of the New Testament and how they fit into this story.
